With Kansas City Functional Medicine at ASFCA

Do you struggle with fatigue, weight loss, or mental acuity? Are you struggling with chronic pain and discomfort? Do you find yourself needing to use the bathroom more often? Is your daily routine or lifestyle being affected by your digestive health and wellness?

You are not alone. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, about 60 to 70 million Americans are estimated to suffer from some form of digestive or gastrointestinal health issue, ranging from mild digestive problems like leaky gut to chronic digestive diseases such as IBS or Crohn’s disease, each year. This means roughly 1 in 5 Americans is affected by digestive conditions annually. (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 2014)

One of the most common root causes of an individual’s decline in health and wellness is gut-related issues. The “gut” or digestive system is one of the body’s most important contributors, breaking down vital nutrients so they can be absorbed, providing energy, supporting growth, and aiding in cellular repair. The gut is one of the body’s most important systems, and protecting it is crucial to optimizing one’s short and long-term health.

Whether it’s digestive issues, food sensitivities, struggles with weight loss, bloating, inflammation, or pain and discomfort stemming from digestive issues. The gut health experts at Advanced Sports and Family Chiropractic and Acupuncture, and Kansas City Functional Medicine are here to help patients achieve and maintain optimal digestive health and wellness through comprehensive natural solutions.

Who’s ready to improve their thyroid function???A 2010 pilot clinical trial published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine investigated the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in patients with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (CAT), the most common cause of acquired hypothyroidism. In this study, 15 hypothyroid patients already receiving levothyroxine (LT4) underwent 10 sessions of LLLT (830 nm, 50 mW) over five weeks. Thyroid ultrasounds and laboratory markers—including T3, T4, free T4, TSH, thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb), and thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb)—were evaluated before treatment and during follow-up after LT4 withdrawal. The researchers also assessed thyroid echogenicity using a computerized gray-scale histogram index.

Results showed a significant reduction in LT4 requirements after LLLT, with nearly half of the participants (47%) remaining off hormone replacement during the nine-month follow-up. Average LT4 dosage dropped markedly, and TPOAb levels significantly decreased, suggesting reduced autoimmune activity. Additionally, ultrasound findings demonstrated improved thyroid parenchymal echogenicity. Although TgAb levels did not significantly change, the overall findings indicated that LLLT may improve thyroid function and reduce autoimmune markers in patients with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. As a small pilot study, however, larger randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm long-term efficacy and safety.
